Arrested in Iraq!

I'm safe and sound and back in the office where we're working, after an interesting event. I was given the truck here, and told I could go out and sketch ... I did so...

The MPs drove up just as I was leaving, and asked me if I was taking photos, I said I was, and that it was part of my job, showed them my Letter of Instruction detailing my job description, etc... they called it in, spoke on the radio with their boss, and told me that though they didn't have a problem with it, I'd still have to come with them down to the station to explain it to the Watch Officer... I followed them in, explained it, showed my ID, papers, secutiry clearance ID, and they told me that I should always phone the MP station before drawing and photographing, and then they let me go.

Wow, what a day, huh? I can now say I got arrested by the MPs in Iraq!

Sgt B, that was amusing beyond belief. You really should have gotten a close up gag picture of you sketching a MP or two with cuffs on your wrists. That would have been the icing on the cake.

I bet you looked very suspicious with pencil and paper in hand. I picture you drawing like crazy, trying to finish the sketch as the MPs drag you away.

Your drawings give life to a war that is most definitely real. I hope you are planning to publish your art so the world can see the many aspects of war through a soldier’s eye. Your drawings came to life, especially the one where the soldier is eating popcorn.

My 18 year old Marine cousin will be going to FALLUJAH on 23 Mar 2007. My wish is that you might be able to sketch a fine young Marine from Alabama.

Great site Kris. Saw an article some time back in the Wall Street Journal about combat artists, can't remember if it was you. I'm searching out soldiers(milbloggers) in Iraq so myself and some friends can send some things you might need over. If you have any special needs or just anything that will help out let me know and where to send it. Mere Christianity is a great book. Try Phillip Yancys "The Jesus I never knew" awesome.

Thanks to all of you for your many good comments on this blog while I was deployed. I will continue to do art (more of it in color, and bigger/bolder) and post on the blog, so keep reading and viewing and commenting! Thanks again...
